02

Who it fits

Best forEstablished and enterprise Shopify subscription brands needing battle-tested scale, deep partner integrations, and predictable performance.

Skip ifBrands without a subscription model; very small stores where Shopify's native subscriptions suffice; merchants wanting bleeding-edge UX innovation (newer entrants ship features faster).

tiered
Tiers (verified 2026-06-05): public Starter $99/mo + 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction (month-to-month); Plus $499/mo + 1.34% + 19¢ per transaction (12-month term); Custom volume-based for high volume. Pricing gotchas: transaction fees apply on every subscription order; Plus requires a 12-month contract. A constrained $25/mo Starter exists OFF the public pricing page — new merchants only (installed after Feb 9, 2026), capped at 50 lifetime subscribers, auto-bumps to $99 at 51. Treat $99 as the sustainable floor. Free plan: 60-day free trial on Starter. Verified 2026-06-05

What operators say

  • I love how Recharge Subscriptions is extremely easy to use and basically runs itself.

    G2 · 2025-12-10

  • It does feel like it is built on some legacy code, which causes issues from time to time.

    G2 · 2025

  • Support is slow and if you get a reply, they are not accommodating - they do not care about your problems.

Our verdict

The data points to a mature-incumbent profile: Recharge claims to power 71% of subscriptions sold on Shopify (per its homepage May 2026), and 20,000+ brands plus 100M+ subscribers are the operating scale. After the April 30 2026 Skio acquisition ($105M cash, joint 20,000 merchants / $20B GMV figure per PR Newswire), Recharge is now the structural incumbent in the category — competing platforms (Loop, Stay AI) ship faster on individual UX innovations but Recharge owns the partner-integration ecosystem. Two pricing realities matter more than the marketed Starter $25 tier. First, Starter is only available to NEW merchants installed after February 9 2026 — existing accounts cannot downgrade to it, and the tier auto-promotes to Standard ($99/mo + 1.49% + $0.19/order) above 50 lifetime subscribers. The Standard transaction fee increased from 1.25% to 1.49% in 2026, so the per-order cost on a $30 subscription is ~$0.64 plus base. Plus ($499/mo + 1.34% + $0.19) requires a 12-month contract. Second, the Concierge SMS, Bundles, Rewards & Referrals, and Product Journeys features are all Plus-gated — Standard is the everyday tier and Plus is where the differentiated retention tools live. For brands wanting bleeding-edge UX innovation, newer entrants ship features faster; Loop has no per-order flat fee, Stay AI has the AI-retention edge. For mid-to-large brands needing battle-tested scale plus the broadest partner ecosystem, Recharge is the structural default. G2 (4.4 / 240 reviews) reflects mixed sentiment honestly — "feel like it's built on legacy code, which causes issues from time to time" is a verbatim 2025 quote alongside the positive ease-of-use feedback.
